"Become a sun in the universe. Become centered and let all this chaos spin around you. Be the center of a hurricane -- the eye of a hurricane. Pull yourself back from the drama. Pull yourself inside and get centered. Energize your system and let it spin. Don't try to direct everything. Just relax and let it unfold." --

Highlight on Class: GENTLE YOGA I

A floor based practice for older students wanting a slower paced, gentle practice of traditional yoga.
Classes will use various methods to increase flexibility, strength, balance and body/mind awareness.  Classes may include the use of props, including chairs, bolsters, therabands, blankets and block, as well as utilizing the wall as a prop to explore traditional poses in a safe mindful practice.
There will be an emphasis on safe alignment, breath awareness and finding your own personal yoga practice.  Adaptations will be offered for individualization.
Classes will be mostly theme based, focusing on  specific body areas, pain relief, osteoporosis, foundation, balance and other topics of interest and importance to students of all levels.
Weekly classes will be similar in content to explore the topics  in more depth.
Each class will end with a long savasana to reset the body and integrate the class learning.
Gentle Yoga I teacher, Terrie Powers, received her 200 hour teacher certification from Shambava School of Yoga in Colorado and is currently enrolled in a 1 year, 500 hour Therapeutic Teacher Training course with noted teacher, Sarahjoy Marsh at Daya Yoga Foundation in Portland, Oregon.  She is also a Registered Occupational Therapist with a BS degree from Ohio State University and has worked in Home Health for over 20 years.  She has a long standing personal practice of daily yoga and meditation.

Monday, August 19, 2013

Hello!  I have just returned from an 8-day, 60-hour, Level 3 Yoga Intensive.  How inspiring and incredible it all was!

Let me share what I have learned with you, every Thursday evening at 6:00 for Intermediate/Advanced Yoga.
We will explore the shoulder girdle to bring much needed strength and stability to these very often under used muscles.  At the same time we will promote suppleness and flexibility to tight areas.  No need to worry if certain postures seem out of your reach, there are always modifications and props to help with more challenging aspects of the practice.

Not interested in a challenging practice?

On Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:45 I will be working with you on
Restorative asanas (postures/poses) to address areas of restriction and common imbalances.  This class can be combined with the meditation class at 6:00pm or taken separately.  There will be a short break in between for students coming and going.

New Class!  Meditation:  Learn mindful techniques and deep pranayama (breathing) practices to calm the mind.  Enjoy the powerful tool of mantra, kirtan, and other techniques to work with the natural qualities of the mind.  And finally settle into silence to experience the subtleties of body, mind, and breath.  Wednesday evening 6:00 - 6:30.
This is a donation based offering to the community.  It can be taken as a separate class or combined with the Wednesday evening Restorative Yoga class (regular price) described above.

And don't forget our other wonderful classes!
Monday 5:30pm  Level 1 Yoga
Tuesday 6:00pm  Level 2 Yoga
Monday, Wednesday  9:00AM  Gentle Yoga
Friday 9:00AM  Therapeutic Yoga

All of us at Lotus Yoga look forward to practicing with you!

RESTORATIVE YOGAS

All Levels Restorative/Yin Yoga
Every Wednesday evening @ 6:00

Restorative Yoga is the ultimate in gentle Yoga.  Seated and reclined postures held for 10-15 minutes, supported by props and guided meditations.  Props consist of  blankets, bolsters, straps, blocks, sandbags, chairs, eye and palm pillows; all provided.  The purpose is to bring you into a state of complete relaxation, allowing the mind to deepen into calm awareness.  The supports help the body to release tight joints and stressed muscles.  The meditations presented will give practical, easy tools that can be applied to daily life. You'll move into a state of bliss!

Yin Yoga is known as "the quiet practice"Much like Restorative Postures, Yin Yoga postures are held for longer periods of time than traditional yoga postures.  All seated and reclined; props may be used if the body needs the extra support.  Postures are held for 4-6 minutes, helping to gently stretch the fascia, the "netting" around the muscles.  Slightly more active & dynamic poses are done in between the Yin postures.  Yin is a subtle, yet very powerful energy to tap into; gets the creative juices flowing and leaves you feeling open, spacious, and calm!
